The College of Plant Protection is one of the oldest colleges at Henan Agricultural University. It has a long history, originating from the Plant Protection discipline at the College of Agriculture at Henan University. Over the years, it has undergone a series of changes, including being known as the Pest Control major at Henan University, the Plant Protection Department at Henan Agricultural College, and finally the Plant Protection Department at the College of Biological Engineering at Henan Agricultural University. In 2001, the college became an independent institution after the university underwent restructuring. With more than 90 years of development, the college has established a strong academic foundation and gained recognition for its distinct educational characteristics and outstanding disciplinary strength. This success can be attributed to the continuous efforts of renowned plant protection scientists such as Zhi Tu and Mingqi Wang, as well as the dedicated faculty.
The college adheres to the educational positioning of focusing on agriculture, serving the province of Henan, reaching out to the entire country, and expanding its influence globally. It upholds the motto of self-improvement, taking action, seeking truth, and fostering innovation, and implements the fundamental task of cultivating virtuous individuals and nurturing talented individuals, with a strong emphasis on strengthening and revitalizing the agricultural sector. Its fundamental goal is to produce top-notch professionals who can contribute to national strategies and regional development. The college aims to establish leading disciplines within the country and has achieved significant success in talent development, scientific research, social services, and international collaborations.
The college offers five undergraduate majors (directions), including Plant Protection and Pharmaceutical Engineering, and is divided into five teaching units, consisting of four departments and one office. The college boasts a strong faculty team with a well-balanced age and educational background structure. It has been recognized with one second prize for national teaching achievements, one special prize, and one second prize for teaching achievements in Henan Province. The faculty has contributed to the field by editing over 30 national planning textbooks and establishing three national-level courses and multiple provincial-level courses. For 12 consecutive years, the postgraduate entrance examination rate has exceeded 40%, and the postgraduate admission rate has surpassed 60% in the past three years. The undergraduate employment rate is over 95%, highlighting the remarkable achievements in talent cultivation.
The college has established five research platforms at the provincial level and multiple research platforms at the university level, working together to drive the college's innovative development. The faculty members of the college have taken the lead or participated in more than 120 major research projects at the national and provincial levels, as a result, they have been awarded one second prize for national scientific and technological progress, three first prizes, and over 20 second prizes for provincial scientific and technological progress. Additionally, they have obtained more than 80 national invention patents.
Over 20 professors from the college have actively engaged in various agricultural initiatives, such as the Science and Technology Special Commissioner Service Team and the guidance group for preventing and controlling major crop diseases and pests in Henan Province. These efforts are in line with the industry's development requirements. Additionally, the college has partnered with numerous industry enterprises to conduct research and development of agricultural products, train talents, and provide technical guidance services. These collaborations aim to support food security, ecological security, biological security, and the revitalization of rural areas.
In the future, the College of Plant Protection is determined to capitalize on opportunities, embrace the current trends, and strive to establish itself as a leading internationally recognized institution in China. Our primary objective is to fulfill the crucial responsibility of safeguarding plant health and ensuring agricultural ecological security. With a collective effort, we will move forward confidently.
