The College of Agronomy is one of the oldest colleges in Henan Agricultural University, with profound academic and cultural deposits. Adhering to the college-running goal of serving agriculture, rural areas and farmers and the college-running philosophy of enriching the people, under the guidance of the university's goal of building a high-level university with agriculture as its dominant feature, the college has adhered to the original intention of running the college, overcome difficulties, and moves forward. It has made positive contributions to national food security, local economic and social development. The college has trained a large number of elites in the agricultural science and technology fields, leading talents of innovation and entrepreneurship, and leaders of agricultural and social development.

The college was founded by Henan Public Agricultural Special School in 1912, which was transformed from Henan Higher Education School. In August 1952, the College of Agronomy of Henan University was separated from Henan University and became the Henan Agricultural College independently, with two departments of agriculture and forestry. In December 1984, the People's Government of Henan Province approved the college's name change to Henan Agricultural University. In December 1994, the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Tobacco were merged into the College of Agronomy.

After a hundred years of accumulation, the College of Agronomy has developed into a teaching and research college with strong strength, outstanding advantages and obvious characteristics of Henan Agricultural University. The college comprises 6 departments, including Department of Agronomy, Department of Crop Breeding and Seed Science, Department of Crop Biotechnology, Department of Chinese Materia Medica, Center of Crop Genomics and Molecular Breeding, Department of Smart Agriculture, and 1 central laboratory. There are 192 staffs, among which, 169 received the doctor’s degree, 20 received the master’s degree, 54 have senior titles (professor or senior research fellow), 36 have associate titles (associate professors or associate research fellow),There are 1692 full-time undergraduates, 756 graduate students and 68 post-doctoral researchers in the college. The college holds the talent philosophy of “ability and moral integrity, comprehensive development”, deeply implements the agricultural cultivation education and “Sanquan education” model, and cultivates top-notch innovative talents with strong comprehensive abilities.

Looking forward, the college will continue to uphold the Chinese Communist Party’s political guidelines, adhere to cultivating virtues and morality as the foundation, take invigorating agriculture as our own responsibility, lead with the first-class crop science discipline, and aim to build a “high-level research college”. The college insists on the development concept of “college-based school”, vigorously implements the dual-wheel drive strategy of synchronizing basic research with application perspective, further strengthens the talent team, improves school-running conditions, enhances domestic and international cooperation and exchange, and improves the quality of talent training and drives the high-quality development of the college’s various undertakings. To cultivate more “understanding agriculture, love rural area, dedication to agriculture” talents, ensure national food security, serve the economic and social development of Hennan province, advance the modernization of agriculture and rural areas, and continuously make new and greater contributions to comprehensive rural vitalization.
