The discipline of plant protection was established in 1930 and has become a key discipline in Henan Province since 2009. It focuses on four research directions: plant disease monitoring and control, agricultural insect and pest control, environmentally friendly pesticides, and biological safety and resource protection and utilization. Over the years, it has expanded its educational programs to include master students in 1978 and doctoral students in crop safety production in 2004. In 2005, it received approval as a first-level master degree authorization point in plant protection with three secondary disciplines: agricultural insect and pest control, plant pathology, and pesticide science and added a new direction in biological safety and plant resource protection and utilization in 2018. In the same year, it was approved as a first-level doctoral degree authorization point in plant protection, and in 2023, a postdoctoral research station was established. The discipline was selected as a supporting discipline for the Double First-Class initiative in Henan Province in 2021. It has also integrated computer science and technology, intelligent science and technology, and remote sensing science and technology, forming a new interdisciplinary field with distinct advantages and characteristics - plant health intelligent management. In 2023, it was approved as a key discipline in Henan Province.
