The results of the 15th Chinese University Student of the Year have been announced and Lv Weizeng, a Ph.D. candidate, now studying in the College of Agronomy, Henan Agricultural University is on the list. He leads the peasants to become rich through planting lotus roots and thus is renowned as “the Doctor in mud”. He is the only college student from Henan province on the list this year and becomes the second student winning the Award in Henan Agricultural University over the past ten years.
Lv Weizeng has been cherishing the aspiration to be “the second Yuan Longping ” since childhood and striving to be an agricultural scientist with persistent efforts. In 2008 National College Entrance Examination, he applied for agronomy major with 10 parallel applications and was eventually enrolled by Henan Agricultural University as he wished. During college time, he worked hard, setting a good example of studying, loving agriculture for others, and gained scholarship each year. He participated in the poverty alleviation by providing planting techniques for large-scale agricultural corporations and large crop production households. As a result, the totalarea of lotus root plantation under his guidance reached tens of thousands of mu nationwide, and the annual income grows by over 6 million yuan and hence he is acclaimed as “the Doctor in mud” by the local farmers. In September 2020, he was awarded such honorary titles as “ the Most Beautiful College Student”and “Brilliant Henan People”.
It is reported that the Selection and Exhibition of 15th Chinese University Student of the Year is jointly directed by the Ministry of Education and the People’s Daily, and is sponsored by People’s Daily Online, the Education Department of Guangming Daily, the journal College Students and Chinese college students online. After rounds of organizational recommendation, correspondence and conference elections, 20 Persons of the Year, 30 nominees and 114 qualifiers were elected.
