Wang Zelin, winner of Henan Provincial Science and Technology Outstanding Contribution Award in 2021, the 79-year-old retired professor from HAU has donated all the royalties from his scientific achievements - 82.08 million yuan ($11.82 million) – to the university, winning praise and respect from the general public.He hoped the money would be used to build a biosafety level 3 laboratory, or P3 laboratory, enabling the university to research and produce vaccines independently.
Wang Zelin was born in Suzhou, a water town in the south of the Yangtze River. He graduated from the veterinary major of Beijing Agricultural University in 1967. At the age of 35, he was admitted to Nanjing Agricultural University as a postgraduate majoring in infectious disease. It has been 37 years since he worked as a teacher in Henan Agricultural University. He has been devoting himself entirely to teaching and scientific research, and prop up the " domestic umbrella"for China's poultry breeding industry with his research achievements.
Passing through 37 years of scientific research and unceasingly hard work,Professor Wang has finally obtained fruitful results. Among his many scientific achievements, Wang gained three patents and 12 new drug certifications, established a research and development platform for concentrated inactivated combination vaccines, and overcame problems in anti-epidemic work against a number of major poultry diseases, including infectious bursal disease and Newcastle disease.
Professor Wang has won 3 patents of invention and 12 new veterinary drug certificate, established a research and development platform for concentrated inactivated combination vaccines, which totally conquers the new type of highly effective Newcastle disease vaccine, infectious bursal disease and other major poultry disease,successfully breaking the foreign monopoly.More than 20 famous Biological products factories witnessed his scientific research results 100% conversion rate. Hundreds of millions of chicken grow healthy, more than 10 billion RMB benefits from his scientific research.
"The P3 laboratory will have an epoch-making effect on the development of related disciplines at Henan Agricultural University," Professor Wang said. "I hope the fund will be used where it is needed and play its due role as soon as possible.The money is only valuable if it is used where it is more needed."
